यस जिल्लाको नामाकरण कसरी भयो भन्ने स्पष्ट कुनै ताकिक आधार नदेखिए पनि सोधकर्ताहरुका अनुसार पांचथर शब्द "पान्थरथुमु" बाट आएको हो र सो "पान्थरथुम" शब्द "पान्थर" र "थुम" मिलेर बनेको शब्द हो । पान्थरको अर्थ कुरा थामेको (Agreed), थुमको अर्थ इलाका वा किल्ला (District) हो
